The series follows Reverend Eric Camden, a Protestant minister living in the fictional town of Glen Oak, California, and his wife Annie as they deal with the drama of raising 7 children (twins Sam and David come later in the series) ranging in age from babies to adults with families of their own.

"Saturday"

Feeling nervous about an important basketball game, Mary un-invites her family to it; Lucy loses track of Simon and Ruthie while babysitting; Eric tries to coax a teenage drug addict back into rehab. Eventually the family ends up at Mary's game...except for Lucy, and at home Eric invites her to a one-on-one father/daughter dinner.

"With a Little Help from my Friends"

Matt starts skipping school and church to help elderly parishioner Mrs. Gladys Bink, who doesn't want anybody to know she's struggling; Eric works hard to help an out-of-work family who live in their van; Lucy fears that nobody cares about her upcoming 13th birthday; Happy delivers her puppies.

Eric and Annie look forward to a quiet household now that all five kids are in school, but each experiences a trauma: Matt is caught wearing his father's pager; Mary gives Lucy an aspirin; Simon is suspended for unknowingly coming to school in possession of a butter knife; Ruthie's teacher finds fault when she refuses to take off her hat.

Eric is determined to lose a little weight after struggling to fit into an old pair of jeans; Mary is angry to discover that Matt paid a friend $20 to take her out; Lucy is thrilled that she and her friend Shelby have been invited to a popular girl's sleepover, but her ex's new girlfriend is also there.
