John Winchester raised his two sons Sam and Dean to hunt and kill all things that go "bump in the night" after his wife Mary was murdered by an evil supernatural being when the boys were little. 22 years later the brothers set out on a journey, fighting evil along the way, to find their recently-missing father; when they finally do he reveals he knows what demon killed their mother and has found a way to track and kill it. Meanwhile, Sam develops frightening abilities such as seeing visions of people dying before it actually happens. These visions are somehow connected to the demon that murdered his mother and its mysterious plans that seem to be all about Sam. When their father dies striking a deal with that very same demon, the brothers determine to finish his crusade. But disturbing revelations about Sam's part in the demon's apocalyptic plan are presented when John's dying last words to Dean are revealed.
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester"
A few days before Halloween, Sam and Dean launch an investigation into two mysterious deaths in a small town. The brothers find hex bags and deduce that a witch is sacrificing people to summon a dangerous demon named Samhain. Castiel tells Sam and Dean that the freeing of Samhain is one of the seals that will lead to freeing Lucifer. Castiel brings a specialist angel named Uriel to smite the entire town to be sure of killing the witch, but Dean convinces him to give the Winchesters a chance. Despite their best efforts, Samhain is freed and the seal is broken. Uriel warns Sam against using his demonic powers and says that he will kill Sam as soon as Sam ceases to be useful to the angels. Castiel reveals to Dean that his true orders were always to follow Dean's orders to test his leadership under battlefield conditions. He confesses that he does not know what the "right" choice would be and warns that hard times are ahead.
